SUMMARY: Protesters gathered at Railroad Park in Birmingham to oppose federal cuts to NIH funding, which could impact research efforts at UAB. The cuts, amounting to an $80 million annual loss for the university, have sparked concerns among students and researchers. Protesters argue that the cuts threaten jobs and hinder progress in vital research, particularly in areas like cancer treatment. Wendy DeMarco, a 30-year research veteran, highlighted the difficulties in adapting to new funding regulations. Despite outreach to Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, no response was received regarding the protest. The movement continues to gain support across Central Alabama.
