Memphis man found guilty of murdering former Southaven football player
SUMMARY: Mark McDaniel has been convicted of second-degree murder for the December 2022 shooting death of former professional football player Christian Saulsberry at a house party in Walls, Mississippi. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton described the act as reckless and cowardly, emphasizing that Saulsberry was a promising young man whose life was senselessly cut short. McDaniel became intoxicated at the party and, after a confrontation with the host, retrieved a firearm and fired into the crowd, fatally striking Saulsberry, who was merely an innocent bystander. McDaniel is set to be sentenced on December 17, 2024.

Jackson councilman calls for mayor to take leave of absence amid corruption investigation
SUMMARY: Amid a bribery investigation in Jackson, Mississippi, Councilman Kenneth Stokes is urging Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to take a leave of absence and consider a plea deal after pleading not guilty to federal corruption charges. Stokes argues that the investigation, which has already led to indictments of four officials, is hindering city progress and eroding public trust. With a trial set for January 2025, Stokes believes Lumumba should prioritize his family’s well-being and cut a deal. The situation has strained relationships in the city, leading residents to relocate and prompting concerns about potential state intervention due to distrust in city leadership.

Jackson State football denies practice film spying allegations
SUMMARY: The Southwestern Athletic Conference is investigating claims that Jackson State gained access to private practice film of Arkansas-Pine Bluff prior to their November 2 game, which Jackson State won 41-3. Allegations arose from a UAPB player’s report about a Jackson State player discussing film access. The inquiry points to a former walk-on, whose account was traced to Jackson, as the potential source but he denied any wrongdoing. Jackson State officials acknowledged the investigation but stated no violations were found. This comes amidst distractions for the Tigers, including seven player suspensions from a recent altercation.
