Memphis community activist sentenced for role in Mississippi bid-rigging scheme

SUMMARY: Memphis community activist Joseph Kyles has been sentenced to four months of house arrest for his role in a bid-rigging scheme involving Cerissa Neal, former executive director of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). Kyles, along with Neal and others, was involved in scamming the government by inflating contract prices and creating false purchase orders. Kyles received over $200,000 in state payments but failed to perform the agreed services. Originally facing 12 charges, Kyles pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in illegal monetary transactions and will also serve two years of probation. Neal’s trial is still pending.

Woman accused of killing Mississippi teacher in wrong-way crash enters guilty plea

SUMMARY:

Jordan Leah Sullivan, 32, of Louisville, changed her plea to guilty after initially pleading not guilty to charges of aggravated DUI in the fatal crash that killed Canton teacher Tyra Small-Jackson on June 22, 2024. Sullivan, allegedly drunk, crashed into Small-Jackson’s car on Interstate 55, resulting in her death. Sullivan had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Small-Jackson, a 23-year veteran educator, had been named Teacher of the Year. Sullivan, with a criminal history, faces a recommended 20-year sentence, following her guilty plea before her February trial.

No. 17 Mississippi State dominates SEC opener with 35-point win over South Carolina

16-year-old who rammed Ridgeland officer with car before being shot released from hospital
