Medical professionals anticipate new Alzheimer’s medication

SUMMARY: The FDA has approved the first medication proven to slow the effects of Alzheimer’s. Medicaid and Medicare are expanding coverage for up to a million people with early forms of the disease. The medication, called La Kimbi, is prescribed for people with mild cognitive impairments or mild dementia who have a family history of Alzheimer’s. This represents around 10% of the over six million people affected by Alzheimer’s. The medication is given as an IV infusion once every two weeks. Medicare recipients may face some out-of-pocket costs, but efforts are being made to reduce those costs. It is hoped that this medication will improve the quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients.
