SUMMARY: Texas has reported its first measles-related death this year amid a significant outbreak in the South Plains region, with 124 cases reported—the highest in over a decade. Most infections are concentrated in Gaines County, which has a large unvaccinated Mennonite community. Health officials emphasize that the spread can be contained through vaccination, noting that the measles vaccine provides 97% lifetime immunity. Currently, around 20 patients are hospitalized, mostly for care rather than quarantine. Additional cases have emerged in New Mexico and other states, prompting health authorities to monitor potential exposure at universities.

SUMMARY: An Austin woman, Alexis Pratchett, who is transgender, faced an unexpected issue when updating her passport to reflect her new last name. After delays in her application, she received a passport with her former gender marker. Pratchett had previously corrected her gender on official documents and provided a court order for her name change, which did not include a gender marker change. She expressed concern over the potential risk and confusion this discrepancy could cause, especially during international travel.
