The agency is hoping for an increase in funding from state lawmakers to tackle more projects like this. MDOT Executive Director Brad White is urging lawmakers to find new ways to increase funding, as the state gas tax has not been raised since 1987. MDOT currently faces a deficit of around $400 million per year for paving needs. While some lawmakers have proposed a gas tax increase, it has never made it to the floor for debate. White is suggesting alternative ways to increase road funding without raising taxes.
