MDOT highlights employees in honor of Black History Month

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Transportation celebrated Black History Month by honoring two of its employees. Earl Glenn made history as the first African American chief engineer for the department. His leadership contributed to key projects, including recovery efforts after severe weather in Rolling Fork and Silver City. Carolyn Bell, who recently retired after 36 years in state government, spent 22 years leading the civil rights division at the Department of Transportation. Bell’s previous work experience included the Department of Education and State Personnel Board. Both employees were recognized for their historical contributions to the department and their leadership in state government.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is taking the time to honor a couple of its employees in honor of Black History Month.

Tupelo waiting on Target to make decision on new store

Volunteers requested for local “Grow-a-Row” program to combat hunger

SUMMARY: A local nonprofit, Petal Healing Garden, is collaborating with the Forest County Agricultural Extension Office on the Grow a Row program to combat food insecurity. Volunteers can participate after completing a food safety course led by Jesse Tisdale. The program not only helps with food donations but also offers a chance for the community to reconnect with gardening, filling a gap left by the loss of agricultural education in local schools. Proceeds from the initiative will benefit the Edwards Street food pantry and the Petal Children’s Task Force in Hattiesburg.
