SUMMARY: More than 40,000 people will be diagnosed with liver cancer this year, which is a leading cause of cancer deaths globally. Traditional treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, but new technology called histotripsy is emerging. This innovative technique employs high-powered ultrasound beams to liquefy liver tumors without surgery, focusing on targets as small as a BB. Surgeon Eric Lou at MD Anderson, one of the few Texas centers offering this treatment, explains it causes minimal damage to surrounding tissue. Histotripsy is non-invasive and can be repeated as needed, with hopes of future applications for other tumor types.
