Mayor says dreaded FEMA rule will change the fabric of her community
SUMMARY: In the aftermath of hurricanes Milton and Helen, residents of Madeira Beach are seeking answers regarding flood damage, debris pickup, and FEMA’s 50% rule. The rule restricts homeowners from making improvements exceeding 50% of their property’s value if significantly damaged. This has left many feeling uncertain about rebuilding, with costs for elevation estimated between $175,000 to $400,000, payable in cash. A recent city meeting drew a large crowd of concerned residents looking for clarity. Mayor Anarie Brooks fears the rule may drive out longtime residents in favor of wealthy investors. The city struggles with a lack of direct communication with FEMA.

Questions remain as to where Rays will play until 2028
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton severely damaged Tropicana Field, prompting many in the St. Pete area to assess the destruction. While repairs could be considered, the Rays need to weigh costs against plans for a new stadium by 2028. The team’s future is uncertain, with speculation about potential temporary venues, including Steinbrenner Field and minor league stadiums in Tampa Bay. As MLB and Rays officials navigate their options, they face challenges in finding a suitable location that meets capacity and facility standards. Meanwhile, the Rays have relocated staff and are evaluating stadium damage, with opening day just 155 days away.
Repairing Tropicana Field could be an option, but with a new stadium coming by 2028, officials must decide if it’s worth the cost.

DeSantis says recreational marijuana ballot initiative is ‘corporate greed’ | Florida
SUMMARY: Governor Ron DeSantis urged Florida voters to reject Amendment 3, which seeks to legalize recreational marijuana. At a news conference in Fort Myers, he criticized the amendment as a corporate power grab, funded largely by Trulieve Cannabis Corp., which could distort Florida’s constitution. He argued that the amendment’s language is misleading and that it would disadvantage citizens by limiting personal cultivation of marijuana. DeSantis emphasized that such issues should be legislated rather than added to the constitution, warning that passing it might change Florida’s culture and lead to increased youth marijuana use and related traffic fatalities.
