Mayor Jimmie Smith sits down with News 11 to discuss the violent crimes in Meridian
SUMMARY: Meridian experienced a challenging day with three shootings, resulting in two children hospitalized. Mayor Smith noted a significant decrease in police force, from over 100 officers to about 60, which hampers public safety efforts. To attract new recruits, he emphasized increasing pay and proposed a retention bonus for officers. Currently, a salary study suggests adjustments for fair compensation, requiring council discussions. Addressing community safety concerns, Smith reassured parents ahead of Halloween, urging vigilance without instilling fear. 911 outages cause counties to pull out backup plans
SUMMARY: A 911 outage affected several Mississippi counties, including Jones County, due to a cut fiber line. Early Wednesday, emergency services had to revert to backup plans, directing callers to administrative lines. Jones County officials communicated the situation through social media to inform the public, which may have limited call volume. Neighboring counties also faced outages, but Smith County remained operational and assisted by handling calls for affected areas. By 9 a.m., 911 services resumed across the impacted regions, alleviating pressure on first responders. Emergency management agencies emphasized their commitment to maintaining community safety despite the disruption.
