Judge rules on Raymond Detention Center takeover
SUMMARY: A recent appeals court ruling favors a federal takeover of the Raymond Detention Center in Hinds County, previously initiated by U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves due to poor conditions. The takeover faced an appeal from Hinds County, citing concerns about accountability to voters and taxpayers. Judges instructed Reeves to reevaluate the consultant’s role while limiting budgeting authority. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department is committed to addressing the jail’s issues, primarily linked to staff shortages. The county has stated that no part of the detention center has been deemed unconstitutional and plans to review the ruling further.
