Mandatory Evacuation Going into Place for Sanibel Island ahead Hurricane Milton
SUMMARY: Mandatory evacuations are being implemented for the Barrier Islands off Southwest Florida, including Sanibel and Captiva, ahead of deteriorating weather conditions due to Hurricane Milton. The Sanibel Causeway, the sole road connecting Sanibel Island to the mainland, was previously damaged during Hurricane Ian in 2022. Although it has been reinforced since then, residents are urged to take the evacuation seriously as a storm surge of 6 to 10 feet is expected. Additionally, the likelihood of power outages will increase from Wednesday into early Thursday, prompting further precautions among the community.
The Weather Channel Meteorologist Felicia Combs reports from Sanibel, Florida where she said mandatory evacuations are going into place for the barrier islands on southwest Florida, off the coast of southwest Florida. Places like Sanibel Island and Captiva have mandatory evacuations going into place Tuesday night as conditions will deteriorate Wednesday ahead of Milton.
