Man convicted in beating death of girlfriend in Jackson
SUMMARY: Billy Gibson was found guilty of second-degree murder for the 2019 death of his girlfriend, Darcie Rich, in Jackson, Mississippi. On December 24, 2019, police discovered Rich unresponsive at their home after Gibson severely beat her with a broomstick, leaving her in a coma. Despite Gibson’s claims, surveillance footage contradicted his account of the events. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 20 years suspended, following his conviction by Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens. Rich was 28 years old at the time of her death.

Rural king store will soon replace Kmart building
SUMMARY: The old K-Mart building in Columbus, Mississippi, is set to become a Rural King outdoor superstore, following the city council’s approval of a $2 million tax incentive over ten years. Rural King sells a variety of products including firearms and lawn supplies. Mayor Keith Gaskin anticipates the store will generate new revenue, create about 60 jobs, and enhance the local economy by attracting shoppers from outside the Golden Triangle. This will be Rural King’s first location in Mississippi, with renovations expected to complete by late 2026 or early 2027, reviving a long-vacant space.

Brookhaven motorcyclist killed in crash on I-55
SUMMARY: A motorcyclist, Joseph Lodrigue, 29, from Brookhaven, was killed in a crash on Interstate 55 in Pike County, Mississippi, on the morning of October 2. The incident occurred when Lodrigue’s 1986 Honda motorcycle veered off the roadway and struck a cable barrier. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
