Man accused of killing Jimmie ‘Jay’ Lee turns self in to police amid new charge
SUMMARY: Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington, accused of killing Ole Miss student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, has been charged with tampering with evidence following the discovery of Lee’s remains in Carroll County. Herrington, who turned himself in to Oxford police, was previously charged with capital murder. Lee, missing since July 2022, was a prominent member of Oxford’s LGBTQ+ community. Herrington’s previous trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury, with a lone dissenter citing the absence of Lee’s body. Now that Lee’s body has been found, a retrial and new evidence could impact the case. A bond hearing is scheduled for February 21.

Mississippi Senate passes bill to implement no-excuse early voting
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s Senate has approved the “In-Person Early Voting Act,” which would allow registered voters to cast ballots up to 15 days before an election without needing an excuse. This would replace the current 45-day absentee voting period. Supporters argue it provides convenience for voters, especially those with scheduling difficulties. However, the bill faces opposition, with concerns about litigation and resistance from many circuit clerks. Despite this, the bill passed with bipartisan support and will now move to the House. Governor Tate Reeves, however, has expressed opposition to no-excuse early voting, which is already in place in 47 states.
