SUMMARY: A significant prehistoric discovery was made in Madison County, Mississippi, with the finding of a seven-foot-long ice-age elephant tusk. Artifact collector Eddie Templeton reported the discovery to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) after noticing the tusk partially exposed in a steep embankment. It was confirmed to belong to a Columbian mammoth, a rare find in the region where mastodons are more common. The tusk, discovered intact rather than in fragments, was transported to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for further study, shedding light on the ice-age ecosystem that included various extinct species and early humans.

SUMMARY: Ahead of Tuesday’s municipal primary election, many voters in Madison were confused about whether elections would occur. Residents learned that there would be no elections this year since no candidates challenged the incumbents. Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson explained that municipalities can forgo elections under such circumstances. Madison’s Republican Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler, who has no challengers, is on track for her 12th term. The existing Republican-only board of aldermen also faces no opposition. This decision to bypass elections saves taxpayer dollars, even though it curtails the opportunity for write-in candidates.
