Mississippi native Cooper Pratt earns minor league gold glove award
SUMMARY: Cooper Pratt, a Biloxi Shuckers infielder from Senatobia, has been awarded the 2024 MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award for shortstop, marking him as the fifth player from the franchise to achieve this honor since 2015. In 2024, he participated in 96 games across Single-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin, contributing to Wisconsin’s first Midwest League Championship Series appearance since 2012. Pratt excelled defensively with a .976 fielding percentage, 338 total chances, 203 assists, and helped turn 51 double plays. The award winners will receive their Gold Gloves during the 2025 season.

Mississippi arts programs get $3.5 million in facility funding
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) has awarded $3.5 million to 20 arts organizations across 13 counties through the Building Fund for the Arts (BFA) Grant. This funding supports the repair, renovation, and construction of facilities for year-round arts programming in the state. David Lewis, executive director of MAC, emphasized the grant’s significance for enhancing arts and cultural identity in Mississippi. A total of 41 letters of intent were submitted, requesting $7 million. The awarded projects include renovations for Ballet Mississippi and the Mississippi Children‘s Museum, as well as improvements for various community arts spaces. Projects must be completed within two years.

Vicksburg convicted felon given 60-year sentence for armed robbery at Dollar General
SUMMARY: De’Anthony Smith, a 27-year-old convicted felon from Vicksburg, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for armed robbery at a Dollar General store in Florence. Following his guilty plea to armed robbery, conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a felon, Smith was sentenced by Judge Steve Ratcliff to 45 years for the robbery, 10 years for firearm possession, and 5 years for conspiracy. In September 2023, he threatened a store clerk and customer with a firearm, stole cash, and was later arrested after police identified his vehicle. Smith had a prior conviction for aggravated robbery in Texas.
