Lt. Gov. Hosemann recognizes schools with high attendance rates
SUMMARY: Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann has recognized 175 schools and 12 districts with the “Lt. Governor’s Attendance Award” for maintaining chronic absenteeism rates of 15% or less during the 2023-24 academic year. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing over 18 days, has risen to 24.4% in Mississippi, significantly higher than in 2018-19. Hosemann aims for all schools to reduce absenteeism to pre-pandemic levels and plans to introduce legislation focused on this issue, including measures like localizing attendance officers and modifying school calendars. The goal is to encourage improved attendance across the state.
