Lowndes County, Columbus awarded grants to combat flooding issues
SUMMARY: Columbus and Lowndes County in Mississippi have been awarded grants to combat flooding. The grants, provided through the Mississippi Municipality & County Water Infrastructure Grant Program Act, will match the funds from the Rural Water Associations Infrastructure Grant Program. The city and county originally had $5 million and $11 million, respectively, in ARPA funds that could have been used for infrastructure issues, but these opportunities were missed. 40% of Columbus is in a flood zone. The grants are seen as a relief for the area, which is familiar with flooding but has not experienced the water rescues seen in other counties.
