Louisiana elderly numbers increasing with big impacts possible for taxpayers | Louisiana
SUMMARY: U.S. Census Bureau data reveals that the elderly population is growing faster than younger demographics, with projections indicating that those aged 65 and older will outnumber children by 2034. In Louisiana, 16.4% of residents were 65 or older in 2020, expected to rise to 19.7% by 2030. This increasing elderly population will pressure the long-term care system, significantly impacting Medicaid spending, which is projected at $18 billion this year. Medicaid allocates $1.7 billion for nursing homes and community services, but Louisiana prioritizes institutional care, facing challenges in shifting funds to home- and community-based services for its aging residents.
