Blue Cross must pay over $400M for breast cancer care, judge rules in Louisiana
SUMMARY: A judge has ruled against a new trial in the Blue Cross Blue Shield case related to coverage of breast reconstructive surgeries. Earlier this year, a jury awarded over $400 million to a local surgical hospital, determining that the insurance company defrauded them by failing to pay for initially authorized surgeries. Many women are unaware that reconstructive surgery is often an insured medical necessity. Blue Cross Blue Shield, which previously authorized surgeries for out-of-network patients but underpaid, plans to appeal the ruling. Survivors advocate for better access to care without insurance complications.
The insurance company must pay over $420 million to a surgical hospital after a jury found they weren’t paying for breast reconstructive surgeries.
