SUMMARY: This year marks 12 years since Superstorm Sandy, which impacted the Eastern Seaboard with heavy rain and significant snowfall in the Appalachian region. Initially forming in the Caribbean, Sandy transformed into a mid-latitude cyclone, leading to a powerful storm surge and extensive wind fields. On October 29, it made landfall in Southern New Jersey, causing historic snowfall, with reports of up to three feet in the central and southern Appalachians. The National Hurricane Center adjusted its warning policies following the storm, emphasizing the importance of public preparedness. Currently, no similar systems are forecasted for East Tennessee.

Residents can seek relief through programs for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Property Assessor Vivian Wilhoite emphasizes the goal is fairness, ensuring homeowners aren’t overpaying. Presentations on the process are being held across the county.
