After heart attack scare, Ladner approaches new season with renewed optimism
SUMMARY: Southern Miss basketball coach Jay Ladner, sidelined by a heart attack in February, returns with renewed optimism for the 2024-25 season. His absence, alongside a series of injuries, led the team to lose four of their last five games, ultimately exiting the Sun Belt Conference tournament early. Emphasizing a new perspective, Ladner plans to lean more on his coaching staff and veteran players, including the talented Puerto Rican duo Andre Curbelo and Neftali Alvarez. With a strong roster and upcoming exhibitions, Ladner aims for a more adaptable team approach this season, focusing on health and mental fortitude.

Jones College football player suing Jackson State, others after being falsely accused of murder
SUMMARY: The family of Joshua Brown, wrongfully accused of murdering a Jackson State student, has filed a lawsuit against the university and various law enforcement entities. Brown was arrested in October 2023 but released after 22 days when security footage proved he was nearly 100 miles away during the crime. The lawsuit alleges wrongful imprisonment, defamation, and conspiracy, claiming significant emotional and reputational harm to Brown. The complaint criticizes the rush to accuse him amid the high-profile case, leading to a negligent investigation. A second suspect was also released due to insufficient evidence, with no new leads in the case.

Mississippi State Fair proves safe for another year but sees slight attendance dip
SUMMARY: The recent Mississippi State Fair attracted 506,952 attendees, a slight decrease from 525,576 in 2022, despite an extra day being added. Commissioner Andy Gipson attributed the drop to higher ticket prices, inflation, and a youth curfew. However, he noted that the economic impact remains around $31 million, similar to last year. The fair, held annually since 1858, operated safely with no serious incidents reported, thanks to coordinated law enforcement efforts. As the fair concluded, Gipson and his team turned their attention to planning the 2025 Dixie National Rodeo, with details about the event upcoming.
