Long Beach leaders piece together harbor repair funding

SUMMARY: Long Beach Harbor in Illinois is still in need of funding to complete repairs three years after Hurricane Zeta. Mayor George Bass and the Board of Aldermen are working to secure state funding for the ongoing legal battle with FEMA. The harbor has been relatively quiet since Hurricane Zeta, with only the sounds of seagulls, pelicans, and occasional construction work. Bass and the Aldermen are seeking an estimated $10 million from FEMA, while FEMA’s estimate for repairs is around $2.3 million. Legal means, including arbitration, are being pursued to obtain the necessary funds.

Earlier this week, it was announced that $400,000 of Tidelands grant money will be allocated towards harbor repairs.
