Long Beach files for arbitration after FEMA funds denied for harbor
SUMMARY: Long Beach is entering arbitration with FEMA after FEMA denied their $10 million request to rebuild the harbor, claiming the damage occurred during Hurricane Nate in 2017, not Hurricane Zeta in 2020. Mayor George Bass disputes this. Long Beach initially requested $995 million, but FEMA has repeatedly denied the applications and appeals. Arbitration involves a panel of three federal judges making the final decision. The city hopes to recoup $1 million. Meanwhile, Gulfport and other coastal cities also await FEMA funds for rebuilding. Despite preparations, Long Beach underestimated Hurricane Zeta's impact, emphasizing the need for better future preparedness.
In October 2020, Hurricane Zeta destroyed the harbor. Since then, the City of Long Beach has lobbied FEMA to pay for the rebuild.
