Locals, officials stand in solidarity with Marcellus Williams in final hours
SUMMARY: Marcellus Williams, convicted for the 1998 murder of reporter Felicia Gayle, is scheduled for execution today despite maintaining his innocence. Support for him has surged globally, with over 1 million signing a clemency petition. Missouri’s Governor Mike Parson is expected to allow the execution, even after questions arose regarding DNA evidence and the jury’s racial composition during Williams’ trial. Prosecutor Wesley Bell’s motion to vacate the conviction was denied. Advocates against the death penalty will gather in various locations, emphasizing that the victim’s family does not support the execution. Williams has been on death row since 2001.
Marcellus Williams is now in his final hours as Missouri prepares for his execution scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24. Despite overwhelming support for Williams from people around the world, Gov. Mike Parson confirmed Monday that the execution will proceed.
