SUMMARY: Georgia’s House Bill 581, which limits homestead property value increases to the rate of inflation, was approved by voters in November. The bill includes a provision for local governments to opt out by filing by March 1, 2024, after holding public hearings. While praised for lowering costs, some governments, including school boards in Thomaston-Upson, Monroe, Wilkinson, and Bibb counties, are opting out due to concerns about financial impacts, such as staff cuts or higher tax rates. Critics argue the bill may discourage home sales and new construction, affecting housing access and potentially reducing homeownership opportunities in Georgia.

SUMMARY: The FBI confirmed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, acted alone when he drove a truck into a New Orleans crowd on New Year’s, inspired by the Islamic State.
