SUMMARY: After an active start to the season with three named storms, tropical activity has quieted down. This lull is due to Saharan dust and sinking air creating an unfavorable environment for storm development. A large high-pressure area over the Atlantic is currently suppressing thunderstorm activity. However, by early to mid-August, a shift to rising air moving from the Pacific into the Atlantic is expected, which could lead to more favorable conditions for tropical development as Saharan dust diminishes. Consequently, tropical waves off Africa’s coast may have better chances of developing over warm waters.
