Darian Atkinson ruled incompetent to stand trial in McKeithen murder case
SUMMARY: Darian Atkinson, accused of killing Biloxi Police Officer Robert McKeithen in 2019, has been indefinitely committed to the Mississippi State Hospital following a competency hearing. Doctors revealed he is receiving treatment for severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, and struggles with symptoms like paranoia and hallucinations, hindering his ability to understand legal proceedings or assist in his defense. Despite some symptom improvement, experts believe he cannot be restored to competency in the foreseeable future. Atkinson will remain in maximum security at the hospital, evaluated annually, with the possibility of trial if deemed competent. Biloxi Police expressed disappointment but maintained faith in the judicial process.
