LIVE: $6.57M to be split among 416 people affected by Bonnet Carré Spillway openings Pt. 2

SUMMARY: In 2019, fishermen and seafood dealers suffered losses due to the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, which caused freshwater intrusion and devastated the seafood industry. To those affected, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is distributing a payout of $6.5 million. Commercial fishermen who were active from 2014-2018 and had a license in 2019 will a base payment of $15,000, while other fishermen will receive a payout of $7,500. The rest of the money will be determined based on the losses experienced. The goal is to quickly get money into people’s hands to alleviate some of the suffering. The department is also working to secure funds for restoring seafood habitats.

From the award, nearly $6 million will be distributed to commercial fishermen in a two-phase payment.
