SUMMARY: As President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20 approaches, controversy surrounds flag protocols. Following the death of Jimmy Carter, President Joe Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days. However, Trump objected to having flags at half-mast during the ceremony, calling it undesirable. House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed Trump’s stance, announcing flags at full staff for the inauguration, before returning to half-staff the next day to honor Carter. Several state governors, including those from Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi, have also expressed support for raising flags on inauguration day.
