License plate reader in Saltillo draws criticism
SUMMARY: A license plate reader on Highway 45 in Saltillo, Mississippi, is causing distress among drivers who are receiving tickets for lacking insurance despite being insured. The camera, installed to identify uninsured motorists, blends into its surroundings, making it difficult to spot. Concerns have been raised regarding the legality of the tickets, as Mississippi prohibits red light cameras and the statute does not explicitly address this issue. Local attorney Jim Wade suggests potential legal challenges. With around 35-40% of Mississippi drivers uninsured, state officials will discuss this situation in January. Meanwhile, many drivers express frustration online.
