Lexington community members honor 9/11 victims step by step
SUMMARY: Tonight, New York City commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, with remembrance events across the country. In Lexington, a reflection ceremony began the day, followed by the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at Kroger Field, where 500 participants honored the sacrifices of firefighters who perished attempting to save others. Climbers ascended 2,400 stairs, symbolizing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Many wore ID cards featuring fallen First Responders’ names, fostering a personal connection. The event also inspires younger generations, with many aspiring firefighters motivated to honor those lost on that tragic day.
It’s hard to imagine what it was like for firefighters running into the Twin Towers on September, 11, 2001, with many of them never making it out.

Advocates against gun violence host symposium in Lexington
SUMMARY: Reports indicate that Lexington experienced fewer shootings and homicides in 2024 compared to the previous year, but community leaders recognize the need for ongoing efforts. At the Symposium on Youth and Young Adult Gun Violence, participants discussed addressing root causes rather than merely treating symptoms. The focus was on understanding the social issues contributing to gun violence, such as lack of housing, food security, and employment. Approximately 100 community members, including leaders from various organizations, collaborated to share resources and strategies. The collective effort aims to create sustainable change to combat gun violence effectively.
For the second year, One Lexington hosted the Symposium on youth and young adult gun violence, with this year’s theme “addressing the sickness, not the symptoms.”
