SUMMARY: On May 11th, Laurel mayor Johnny McGee declared it the Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive day. This annual event, organized by the Letter Carriers Association since 1991, has collected nearly two billion pounds of food nationally for local pantries. In Laurel, donations will go to the Good Samaritan Center and Bread of Life Center. Members of the association see the drive as a way to help those in need along their mail routes. Residents can leave non-perishable food items near their mailboxes on Saturday, and volunteers are needed for the drive. For more information, contact the Laurel Post Office at 614-251-1408.

The Letter Carriers Association has been hosting the drive on the second Saturday of May each year since 1991.

SUMMARY: Emergency officials warn that frying frozen foods increases the risk of grease fires, particularly during the holiday season, which sees an uptick in cooking-related accidents. Rankin County Emergency Services highlights that improper cooking causes an average of five deaths, 60 injuries, and over $15 million in property damage annually. To prevent such incidents, ensure frozen turkeys are fully thawed before frying. Children should be kept away from the kitchen to avoid accidents. For minor burns, cool water treatment is recommended, while serious burns require immediate medical attention. Thanksgiving is notably the peak day for cooking fires.

SUMMARY: Bevelyn Batty Williams faces 41 months in prison for violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act during a pro-life protest outside Planned Parenthood in Manhattan in June 2020. Convicted in February 2023, she was accused of intimidating and obstructing individuals seeking reproductive health services, including physically blocking access and making threats. Her husband claims her comments were misunderstood as spiritual warfare rather than actual threats. Despite being found not guilty of conspiracy related to different clinics nationwide, her actions led to a harsher sentence, with prosecutors labeling her a “ring leader” in the protests.
