SUMMARY: Nearly a week after Lee County Sheriff Mickey Stein was charged with the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. The case has shocked the small Appalachian town of Whitesburg. During a virtual arraignment, Stein, lacking a lawyer, had Josh Miller from the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy present. The special prosecutor argued that Stein’s salary shouldn’t exempt him from bearing legal costs. Stein faces possible death penalty charges, and Kentucky State Police indicated an argument preceded the shooting, though the motive remains unclear. Meanwhile, Governor Bashir has urged Stein to resign. A preliminary hearing is set for October 1.

Days after the sheriff of Letcher County, Kentucky, allegedly shot and killed District Judge Kevin Mullins in his court chambers, people in the county are still acclimating to the new status of things.

SUMMARY: Former Kentucky Democratic Party chairman Jerry Lundergan, convicted in 2019 for illegal campaign contributions and conspiracy, received a controversial pardon from President Joe Biden shortly before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Lundergan, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for funding his daughter Allison Lundergan Grimes’ 2014 Senate campaign with over $200,000 in corporate funds, had his civil rights restored, including the right to vote. This pardon faced backlash from Kentucky Republicans, as state lawmakers consider measures to limit future gubernatorial pardons during election periods to ensure justice system integrity and transparency.
