Left in the dark by their insurance company, a business destroyed in Hurricane Helene is looking …
SUMMARY: The Hickory Nut, a 27-year-old business in Chimney Rock, North Carolina, suffered devastating damage during Hurricane Helene, leaving the owner, Sherry Cummings, seeking answers and assistance. Cummings filmed the moment her business and home were washed away, with personal belongings floating down the river. Despite her insurance company offering minimal compensation, claiming they only occupied 15% of the building, she has managed to set up a temporary shop at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. Cummings remains hopeful for support and is determined to rebuild as engineers assess the damage.

International students urged to return to US campuses before Trump inauguration
SUMMARY: As President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration approaches, U.S. colleges are advising international students to return to campus before Jan. 20, 2025, to avoid potential travel bans like those from his first term. Trump previously issued a travel ban targeting citizens from predominantly Muslim countries and indicated plans to expand such restrictions. Many international students, particularly from the 15 affected nations, worry about the impact on their ability to stay in the U.S. Schools like Harvard, MIT, and USC have issued advisories, urging students to return early or prepare for possible delays at immigration control.

Smart holiday spending
SUMMARY: Experts warn that using “Buy Now, Pay Later” options during holiday shopping could lead to missed payments and bad credit. This payment method, often used by younger generations like Gen Z, breaks up payments into smaller amounts, but can accumulate unnoticed debt, affecting monthly budgets. Studies show that Gen Z’s credit card debt is increasing, and small payments can quickly add up to a significant amount. Experts suggest assessing needs vs. wants and saving for larger purchases to avoid financial strain in the future, especially when considering long-term goals like homeownership or retirement. Have you ever considered using “Buy Now, Pay Later” when shopping?

Supported by the Society’s 321 group, Ezra has developed skills, made friends, and learned life skills. His mother, Wanda, emphasizes that Down syndrome is just a label, not a disadvantage. The Society offers programs for all ages, fostering community connections and advocating for awareness. It encourages treating individuals with Down syndrome like anyone else, without labels.
