Ole Miss professor solves food insecurity with STEM
SUMMARY: The White House has recognized University of Mississippi professor David Holin for his efforts to address food insecurity through the National Institutes of Health and USDA-funded Food Master initiative. This program engages scientists, teachers, and students in using food to enhance STEM education. Recently, it won the White House’s Year of Open Science Recognition challenge, leading to an invitation for the winning teams to celebrate at the White House. The National Institutes of Health awarded Holin $11.35 million through the Science Education Partnership Award to develop a nutrition-based STEM education program called Learning Science.

12-year-old cancer survivor given special honor from Northwest Rankin football team
SUMMARY: At Northwest Rankin Middle School, 12-year-old Hunter Burkhalter, a cancer survivor who battled osteosarcoma and underwent an amputation, has inspired his community throughout his journey. Despite missing a year of school for treatment, he remained a proud part of the school. Recently, the football team honored him by inviting him to be the honorary captain for a game. Hunter expressed his hope to inspire others, sharing that with determination, anyone can overcome challenges. Now in remission, he looks forward to participating in the coin toss, celebrating both his victory and the support of his peers.
A cancer survivor at Northwest Rankin Middle School received the surprise of a lifetime from a team that’s wrapped their arms around him from the start of his fight with the disease.

2 in custody in Adams County shooting
SUMMARY: After a crash, an officer was pulled from his squad car and hospitalized but is now recovering at home. Meanwhile, two individuals are in custody following a shooting on Myrtle Drive in Natchez. Adams County Sheriff’s deputies cordoned off the area and detained two suspects, one of whom is believed to be the shooter. Investigators marked at least half a dozen pieces of evidence at the scene during their investigation.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting.
