Leander ISD budget deficit: Students upset with program cuts | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: The Leander ISD Board of Trustees is reviewing teacher salaries and budget projections amid concerns over proposed cuts to the International Baccalaureate Program. Students expressed their anger during the meeting, with some threatening to leave the district. Superintendent Bruce Gearing noted that state funding for schools has not increased since 2019, exacerbating their financial issues. The district faces a $34 million deficit, prompting cuts of over 200 staff positions. Meanwhile, the Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 26, aiming to improve teacher pay by increasing salaries by $2,500 to $5,500 based on experience, as a permanent budget commitment.

Lack of funding has put school districts like Leander ISD in a difficult position where they have to cut hundreds of positions and programs.

'It's a nightmare scenario': Poultry farmers try to keep up with record-high egg demand amid the thr
SUMMARY: Egg prices are rising due to a low supply caused by bird flu outbreaks, which have devastated farms. At Paul Hexley’s farm in Flatonia, Texas, the family-operated business manages over 4,000 hens, producing up to 3,200 eggs daily. However, rising demand and a shortage of chickens make it difficult to meet needs, as bird flu recently wiped out nearly 23 million birds. Farmers like Paul face tight conditions, practicing preventive measures to keep their flocks healthy. As costs rise, egg prices could increase by 50 cents to a dollar, leaving farmers uncertain about future market stability.

Millions of birds were killed due to bird flu last month, leading to record-high egg prices across the country. Hear from the farmers trying to keep up.

Texas Senate votes to criminalize mobile lottery applications
SUMMARY: The Texas Senate unanimously voted to criminalize lottery couriers just days after the Texas Lottery Commission banned them. If approved by the House and signed by Gov. Abbott, acting as a courier for pay could lead to a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $4,000 fine. State Sen. Bob Hall criticized the bill, advocating for the complete abolition of the lottery commission. The issue gained traction after a controversial jackpot win linked to couriers. The Coalition of Texas Lottery Couriers argued for regulation instead of a ban, citing their role in expanding access to lottery games.
