Lawmakers say investigation didn't cover key concerns
SUMMARY: An investigation into the Oklahoma State Department of Education found no criminal wrongdoing but highlighted significant communication breakdowns. State Superintendent Ryan Walters claimed vindication from the findings. However, several lawmakers, including Rep. Mark McBride, expressed dissatisfaction, claiming the investigation failed to address critical issues, particularly concerning the misuse of school safety funds. McBride is pushing for a more comprehensive investigation amidst concerns about Walters’ spending on out-of-state trips and rising legal costs. These legislators argue that without a thorough examination of these matters, accountability cannot be ensured, leaving many questions unanswered.

Housing Insecurity Forcing Oklahoma Seniors To Move
SUMMARY: Angela Moore, 65, hopes to move into The Harmony Marcus Garvin Apartments in northeast Oklahoma City, an affordable senior housing complex. With 900,000 Oklahomans aged 60 and older, the need for such apartments is growing, driven by rising rents and limited options. Nearly 40% of seniors rely solely on Social Security, which has failed to keep pace with rent increases. Many seniors, like Shanon Van Gordon, have faced eviction and were forced to relocate, while others, such as Janet Anders, have become homeless. Advocates stress the urgent need for more affordable housing solutions for Oklahoma’s aging population.

Florida Couple Accuses Berry-Rock Homes of Fraud in Rent-to-Own Program
SUMMARY: Michael and Shannon Taylor filed a lawsuit against Berry-Rock Homes and LIV Mortgage, alleging the companies misled them during their rent-to-own agreement for a house in Yukon, Oklahoma. The Taylors claimed they were encouraged to lie about their business income by a loan officer from LIV Mortgage to secure a mortgage for the property. They also allege that Berry-Rock improperly handled their $30,700 nonrefundable deposit. After moving out, the house was listed for sale. The companies countersued, claiming the Taylors violated their agreement and sought to leverage complaints for financial gain. An $8 million state investment in Berry-Rock Homes is also under scrutiny.
