SUMMARY: A bipartisan group of 26 U.S. lawmakers has reached out to seven major tech companies about combating the rise of pornographic deepfakes on social media, which surged by 550% from 2019 to 2023 and now constitutes 98% of all deepfake videos. The lawmakers expressed concerns over companies’ inadequate responses to deepfake abuse, highlighting Google, Apple, X, ByteDance, Snapchat, Microsoft, and Meta. The hotline, crucial for providing emergency mental health services, has seen significant call volumes since its launch in 2022 but struggles with staffing and federal funding declines. Less than 85% of calls are answered in-state, and a proposed Senate Bill aims to establish a trust fund to improve funding through cellphone surcharges. Advocates stress the need for equitable support for crisis services to match emergency services like 911.
