Law enforcement shares safety reminders ahead of busy holiday weekend
SUMMARY: For holiday travel, experts recommend leaving before noon or after 7 PM, as interstates will be busiest between 2 PM and 6 PM. With the Labor Day weekend approaching, law enforcement is emphasizing water safety. Florida’s PBC ranks fourth in boat accidents this year. St. Pete Marine Unit warns of increased inexperienced boat drivers and stressed the importance of life jackets for children under six. Boaters are cautioned to be vigilant due to debris from recent storms. Officers are also cracking down on sobriety while boating. More safety tips can be found at abcactionnews.com.
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report shows Pinellas County ranked fourth in the state for the number of boat crashes in 2023. As we head into a busy holiday weekend, law enforcement officials are stressing safety to prevent as many crashes as possible. “We’re going to have multiple agencies on the water,” Officer Dan Carvin with the St. Pete Police Marine Unit said.

An ex-police officer is convicted of lying about leaks to the Proud Boys leader
SUMMARY: A retired Washington police officer, Shane Lamond, was convicted of obstructing justice and making false statements regarding leaks of confidential information to Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found Lamond guilty after a bench trial, with sentencing set for April 3. Lamond was accused of informing Tarrio about a warrant for his arrest related to the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner. Despite Lamond claiming he didn’t support the Proud Boys and asserting he was merely cultivating a source, prosecutors presented evidence of him providing updates on police investigations. Lamond served 23 years in the department before retiring in May 2023.

Asian shares are mostly higher after Wall Street rally caps a dismal week
SUMMARY: Asian shares mostly rose on Monday following a U.S. stock rally, despite the S&P 500 ending down 2% for the week. U.S. lawmakers passed a budget deal, preventing a government shutdown. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 climbed 0.9% while Honda and Nissan’s potential merger created market fluctuations. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Australia’s S&P/ASX 500 also saw gains. In the U.S., Friday’s gains were driven by positive inflation data, though concerns about fewer interest rate cuts next year lingered. Oil prices increased slightly, with U.S. crude at $69.86 a barrel.
