Laurel leaders consider annexation into Calhoun community
SUMMARY: The city of Laurel is considering annexing part of the Calhoun community to stimulate economic growth. A recent city council resolution proposes expanding the city limits along Highway 84, encompassing businesses up to Highway 28. Business owner Scott Carmichael opposes the annexation, arguing it targets businesses and would increase taxes without offering significant benefits. Mayor Johnny McGee contends that annexation will provide businesses with improved services like sanitary sewers and garbage pickup, as well as reduced insurance costs. The annexation process, requiring court approval, is expected to take a couple of years. The next city council meeting will discuss the second reading of the proposal.
The City of Laurel is looking to annex one community outside the city limits to add more economic growth.
