Laurel Co. man dies during attempt to serve search warrant at wrong address
SUMMARY: Douglas Harless was fatally shot by a London police officer while authorities attempted to serve a search warrant at his home in Laurel County, Kentucky, on December 23. The warrant was linked to an investigation of stolen lawn equipment, specifically a weed eater reportedly owned by the Laurel County judge executive. Hobert Buttery, arrested earlier that day, claimed he directed police to the property but that they went to the wrong address. Buttery expressed remorse, stating Harless was a good man who didn’t deserve the incident. He insisted the whole situation stemmed from a misunderstanding involving a weed eater.

Kentucky General Assembly picks back up for part 2
SUMMARY: Kentucky lawmakers reconvened in Frankfurt to continue the legislative session, successfully passing House Bill one, an income tax cut championed by Republicans, which is now headed to the governor. This bill received bipartisan support, with only three Democrats opposing it, citing concerns about its regressive impact. Meanwhile, Democrats unveiled a platform of 15 bills aimed at benefiting working Kentuckians, focusing on public schools, criminal justice reform, healthcare access, and workers’ rights, with a significant emphasis on housing. Representative Lindsey Burke highlighted the importance of collaboration with Republicans to ensure the success of their proposals.
Kentucky lawmakers returned to Frankfort Tuesday to pick up part two of this year’s regular session of the General Assembly, and no time was wasted on addressing priorities for both sides.

Volunteers help Animal Care Society, a no-kill shelter, prepare expanded facilities
SUMMARY: The Animal Care Society (ACS) in Louisville is expanding its facilities, currently housing around 100 animals, including 50 cats and 50 dogs. Community members, including University of Louisville football players and volunteers, helped prepare a new building that will serve as the primary adoption center and cat area. ACS, Kentucky’s first no-kill shelter, has been operational for 40 years and aims to double its capacity to save more animals from euthanasia. The expansion is critical for providing homes to more animals and supporting local rescue organizations during crises. Volunteers dedicated four hours to this rewarding effort.
