Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Tax Assessor clears the air about the increase in property taxes
SUMMARY: The recent discussion around tax increases and property value reassessments has led to confusion. It’s important to clarify that the anticipated 20% figure refers to a potential increase in property values, not taxes, and individual assessments will vary. This reassessment arises from changes in construction costs, market conditions post-pandemic, and observed conditions of properties, with 46,000 parcels evaluated. Some properties may decrease in value, particularly if poorly maintained. Over-65 residents with homestead exemptions will see frozen values. Tax assessments multiply the new value by the millage rate, with owner-occupied properties assessed at 10%. For further inquiries, residents can contact the office or visit their website.

Pet of the Week: Matilda
SUMMARY: Chris Menard, a volunteer at the Tupelo Le Humane Society, introduces Matilda, a sweet but initially nervous dog. Once she warms up, her true personality shines. Matilda dislikes leashes but stays close to her companions while walking. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and has no history of heartworms. Matilda came into the shelter with one puppy in August. She is a good size, friendly with kids, and would make a great family pet. The shelter urges the community to meet Matilda and other pets in need of loving homes.
Matilda is WTVA’s Pet of the Week for Oct. 18, 2024.
