Largest US egg producer finds bird flu in chickens at Texas plant

SUMMARY: Cal-Maine Foods, Inc., the largest producer of fresh eggs in the U.S., has temporarily halted production at a Texas plant after bird flu was found in chickens. Approximately 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets were euthanized due to avian influenza. The company is working to secure production from other facilities to minimize disruption to its customers. There is no known bird flu risk associated with eggs currently in the market, and properly handled and cooked eggs are safe to eat. In Michigan, bird flu was also detected in a commercial poultry facility. Additionally, bird flu infections have been reported in dairy cows in Texas, Kansas, and Idaho.
