Lamar County working on Crisis Stabilization Unit
SUMMARY: Lamar County plans to convert a former National Guard armory building in Purvis into a 16-bed crisis stabilization unit to help people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. The facility will have a 23-hour living room model and staff including nurse practitioners and CIT-trained officers. It will work with the Department of Mental Health and Pine Belt Mental Healthcare to offer intervention and provide an alternative to the jail system for individuals in need of treatment. The unit aims to prepare individuals for reintegration into society and has raised over 5 million dollars for construction, set to begin in early 2024.

Mississippi bill would end DEI ideology in state’s higher education | Mississippi
SUMMARY: Mississippi state Sen. Angela Burks Hill has proposed Senate Bill 2223, aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the state’s higher education system. The bill would prohibit public institutions from using funds to support DEI offices or personnel and ban diversity training and preferential treatment based on race, sex, or ethnicity. Additionally, schools must report compliance and reallocate funds previously designated for DEI towards merit scholarships and tuition. The bill is under consideration by the Mississippi Senate Universities and Colleges Committee. Another bill, 2515, is also being reviewed, focusing on the efficiency of the public university system.
