SUMMARY: Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has initiated a government efficiency task force aimed at identifying waste and inefficiencies within the state government, following a model similar to that proposed by President Trump. Landry appointed Steve Orlando, an oil and gas executive, as the Financial Responsibility czar to oversee the new Fiscal Responsibility Program. The task force will evaluate expenditures, state contracts, and staffing levels for potential cuts, while also seeking to enhance service delivery through technology. The group’s first report is due December 31, 2025. Landry has previously claimed to have cut $2 billion in state spending, although much of this was due to federal cuts.

thecurrentla.com – Geoff Daily – 2024-12-17 09:45:00

SUMMARY: In December, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released county-level GDP data, showing Lafayette Parish’s economy grew faster than both the U.S. and Louisiana averages, with a 3.3% growth compared to the national 2.9%. Since 2019, Lafayette’s GDP grew by 7.5%, though still 5.2% lower than its 2014 oil boom peak. Despite these positive trends, Lafayette lags behind national growth, with a 29.1% increase since 2001, compared to the U.S. at 59.3%. Economic health relies on more than GDP, but Lafayette must not be complacent, leveraging opportunities to grow beyond oil and gas dependence for a more stable future.
