SUMMARY: NASA is funding research at Louisiana Tech to develop sustainable farming methods for space and lunar environments. Led by Dr. Joan Liam, the team is exploring how to grow crops without soil by utilizing human waste, specifically urine, as a nutrient source. Their experiment compares plants grown with synthetic urine to those with regular nutrients. They employ a technique called direct contact membrane dissolution, which transforms urine into a vapor that can be condensed and used as fertilizer. This innovative approach aims to ensure human survival and sustainability in deep space missions, with plans to implement the method within six years.

A biomass team from Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering and Science, including Dr. Joan Lynam, Dr. Aamir Iqbal, and PhD student Tarikuzzaman have been researching and experimenting on a new method for growing crops without the weight of soil. This would be essential to space exploration and being able to live in places other than Earth.
