โWe canโt put more cars & trucks on IH-35โฒ: Sakai pushes for improved passenger rail service
SUMMARY: Bear County Judge Peter Sakai emphasizes the need for rail service as an alternative to increased vehicular traffic on I-35, especially given the expected population growth in the San Antonio-Austin Corridor from 5 million to 8 million by 2050. Elected leaders, along with the Texas passenger rail advisory committee, took a train ride to highlight the benefits of expanded rail capacity for mobility, economic development, public safety, and traffic alleviation. Although federal funding for passenger trains is available, Texas has missed out on $19 billion due to a lack of matching funds. The committee plans to advocate for increased state funding in the upcoming legislative session.
Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and San Antonio City Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda rode an Amtrak train from San Antonio to Austin on Monday morning in an effort to promote the importance of improved rail service in the region.
