Kinship Care offers resources, emotional support to families in Houston
SUMMARY: September is National Kinship Care Month, highlighting individuals who care for children when biological parents are unable to do so. KPRC 2’s Lisa Hernandez spoke with Terry Brent, who became a caregiver for her daughter’s two children due to her inability to provide adequate care. Brent faced significant financial burdens, such as daycare costs and the need to buy clothes and food. DePelchin program manager Jod Chandler assists caregivers in accessing resources to alleviate financial struggles. Their Kinship Navigator program offers support to caregivers in Harris County and helps maintain children’s connections to family, ultimately enhancing their prospects for stability and adoption.

Children whose parents can no longer care for them may enter foster care, but the state’s first priority is to place them with family, if possible—a process known as Kinship Care.

First responders found Vias emaciated and covered in wounds after Canales called 911 on Valentine’s Day to report her daughter wasn’t breathing. Family members expressed regret for not intervening sooner, as Vias had been seen healthy in 2021. While the medical examiner has not confirmed the cause of death, Canales faces a charge of serious bodily injury to a disabled person. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Vias’s death, seeking clarity on the timeline and potential additional charges.

The aunt of a 19-year-old Balch Springs girl found dead and malnourished says she loved to play outside and that she’s remembering her happy and with a smile.

Protesters call for more public school funding
SUMMARY: Hundreds marched to the Texas Capitol, demanding increased funding for public schools while opposing Governor Abbott’s advancing school choice voucher plan. Proponents argue vouchers offer educational options, but critics contend they could harm public schools, many of which are already facing budget shortfalls. The rally, organized by Save Texas Schools, highlighted the urgent need for increased per-student funding, which has remained stagnant since 2019. Teachers expressed concerns over layoffs and program cuts, emphasizing the importance of public education. As lawmakers prepare to debate the voucher legislation, protesters plan another rally in April to continue their advocacy.

Protesters gathered at the state capitol Saturday to call for more funding in public schools.
