Why doesn’t Madison have a municipal election this year? State law allows some cities to opt out
SUMMARY: Ahead of Tuesday’s municipal primary election, many voters in Madison were confused about whether elections would occur. Residents learned that there would be no elections this year since no candidates challenged the incumbents. Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson explained that municipalities can forgo elections under such circumstances. Madison’s Republican Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler, who has no challengers, is on track for her 12th term. The existing Republican-only board of aldermen also faces no opposition. This decision to bypass elections saves taxpayer dollars, even though it curtails the opportunity for write-in candidates.

Municipal primaries: Jackson Democrats head to runoff as suburbs gets answers
SUMMARY: Polls closed in Mississippi on Tuesday, revealing a shift in support for Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, who garnered only 16.8% in the Democratic primary, down from nearly 70% in 2021. State Sen. John Horhn led with 48.4%, triggering a runoff on April 22. Lumumba, facing a federal bribery indictment, insists he’s a victim of political prosecution. In city council races, new candidates will emerge following the decision of councilman Aaron Banks not to seek reelection. Suburban elections included Kathy Smith winning Flowood’s mayoral primary, while incumbents in Brandon, Pearl, and Ridgeland faced no challengers.
